As a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Academy of Teaching & Learning (ATL), you will assist senior faculty in all areas of academic success support provided to students who are in their first two years of their medical school journey. Reporting to the ATL director, you will:

  • Assist with the delivery of individualized and group academic coaching
  • Assist with the facilitation of sessions in the Academic Enhancement (ACE) and Principles for Academic and Cognitive Excellence (PACE) courses and Road to Success program
  • Assist senior faculty with delivery and oversight of the ACE and PACE courses
  • Assist with the mentorship of medical sciences students
  • Represent ATL in one of RUSM's Learning Communities 

Teaching Assistants will spend most of their time coaching students and working in a team to provide academic support to students.

The Team

The Academy of Teaching & Learning‘s (ATL) mission is to help students achieve a solid foundation in the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to succeed in the medical sciences program. We are designed to provide students with academic coaching to help them develop an academic action plan and cultivate effective study strategies including time management, test taking skills and content review techniques to increase their chances of achieving their target exam scores. ATL also supports students with improving their communication including occupational English skills.

Primary Responsibilities

The ideal applicant will be able to engage, mentor, and assist in coaching a diverse student body, as well as work closely and cohesively in a team under the instruction and supervision of the ATL faculty and Director of ATL. To this aim, they must possess excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and public speaking skills. It is also important the Teaching Assistant be self-directed and able to work effectively as a member of a team. Strong candidates for this role should be motivated by working on robust, complex, ever-evolving initiatives that are student driven.

Requirements/Skills

  • Assist in the instruction of ACE and PACE courses especially with small group learning
  • Academic support will consist of tutoring sessions on content integration, advising on recommended study strategies and test taking skills, content review using multiple choice questions, as well as monitoring the success of students and providing check-ins
  • Serve as mentors to a cohort of students by maintaining close communication with each student and providing guidance
  • Participate in ATL meetings
  • Attend training sessions to become competent in session facilitation, academic support and assessment skills
  • Work independently and collaboratively with a team by developing and cultivating relationships and networks to achieve desired results
  • Create student academic resources with the senior faculty to enhance the student experience, such as presentations, videos, and selection of MCQ questions sets
  • Complete other duties as assigned by ACE and PACE Semester Leads such as grading of  assignments
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Preferred Experience

  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience in academic setting
  • Mentoring or advising experience in academic setting
  • Leadership experience in student co-curricular activities
  • Proficiency in computer skills including Microsoft Office (specifically, Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint)

Work Demands

  • All Teaching Assistants target start in June, pending immigration process
  • Applicants must be able to work in their role as TAs until May 31, 2025
  • Expected to work Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM AST
  • Expected to work 40 hours a week on average
  • Ability and willingness to work and collaborate with other RUSM teams, like Student Affairs and Student Services
  • Ability and willingness to tutor in evenings or weekends if necessary
  • Applicants will be permitted to attend all residency interviews upon approval from director of ATL

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine. Required and
  • Master's Degree Required and
  • completion of all rotations. Required and
  • Satisfactory or better grade in 5th semester Required and
  • Satisfactory or better grades in all subsequent activities undertaken as RUSM student, including Satisfactory or better performance on NBME qualifying exams. Required
  • Preferably, to have been undertaken in the Miami program
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Strong teaching skills and experience or evidence of potential.
  • Desire for self improvement
  • Flexibility and ability to work well on a team.
